Orioles set Opening Day roster; Armstrong on paternity list

BOSTON—Even though the Orioles’ Opening Day game against the Boston Red Sox has been postponed until Friday, they did have to set their 26-man roster.

Right-handed pitcher Shawn Armstrong begins the season on the paternity list, allowing the team to carry Cole Sulser and Dillon Tate among its 14 pitchers.

Travis Lakins was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, and outfielder DJ Stewart was placed on the 10-day injured list because of a strained left hamstring.

Two players, right-hander Hunter Harvey (oblique) and first baseman Chris Davis (back), are on the 60-day injured list and don’t count against the 40-man roster.

  • I know the O’s have some good young arms coming up but I’m thinking maybe one more worst record in MLB to get next years top pick and grab Jack Leiter from Vanderbilt would be worth it.

    • My bad, what was I thinking? He’ll be taken in this years draft so he’ll be gone by the time the O’s pick. Oh well.

      • What's it matter? With Elias, we wouldn't see him until 2025.

        Besides ... tanking stinks.

        • In Elis I trust. Look what happened to Bundy and Gausman. Never came close to their potential with O’s

          • I'm sure a lot of their shortcomings had to do with the park, but hey, look at what they're doing now.

    • Maybe not, people picking before them could try to manipulate the draft, kind of like what the O’s did with the 2nd pick last year...go O’s...

    • BRR, I was not advocating tanking, tho after rereading what I wrote I can absolutely see how it would be taken that way. No, sadly, I simply meant that, looking at the team they’re going to be fielding this year, if they were to end up with the worst record this year it would at least lead to getting a shot at a terrific pitcher. No, I’m looking forward to the days when they’ll be drafting very late in the first round.

    • Bundy opening day starter for Angels. Arrieta back in Chicago . O Day a Yankee. Christian Walker batting fourth for Arizona. Yastrzemski playing like a Yastrzemski. I could go on and on

      • What are you doing? Listing players previously in Orioles organization who were traded or granted free agency and are now starting for another team? Seems like you could do that for any MLB team

    • Gausman also Opening Day pitcher for Giants tho that might be more an indictment on Giants pitching than how well Gausman is doing. Still a feather in his cap tho.

  • It will be interesting to see how well Means, Harvey, Kreamer, Lopez, Zimmerman pitch this year. If they pitch well O’s will surprise alot of people

  • O’s offense should get a boost. Mancini is back. And hopefully a full healthy year from Mountcastle, Hays, Santander
