The Orioles claimed right-handed pitcher Ashton Goudeau on waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday. They also outrighted catcher Austin Wynns to Triple-A Norfolk.
Goudeau, 28, had a 7.56 ERA in four games with the Colorado Rockies in 2020 and was claimed on waivers by Pittsburgh from the Rockies on November 25th.
Wynns, who was the Orioles’ 10th-round draft pick in 2013, hit .239 with five home runs and 16 RBIs in 70 games in 2018 and 2019. He wasn’t on the club’s active roster in 2020 and was assigned to the alternate site at Bowie. Wynns was part of the taxi squad on several road trips.
The Orioles have 38 players on the 40-man roster, including catchers Pedro Severino and Chance Sisco. The team is expected to sign at least one veteran catcher over the winter.
Last week, the Orioles signed right-handed pitcher Conner Greene to a minor league contract. Greene, 25, is 39-45 with a 4.22 ERA in 172 games in the Toronto, St. Louis and Kansas City organizations.

Yes, we are moving backwards, but that is the genius of the GM's strategy which we outsiders cannot fathom.

To be honest, I never heard of Goudreau. Doing some research, he made some sort of adjustment in AA in 2019, changing his hand position and junking his slider. His ERA in AA in 2019 was 2.07. Pitched well in the Arizona Fall League. Obviously didn’t pitch well for the Rockies this year, but only 4 games. Probably has more upside than David Hess or Thomas Eshelman. Didn’t really cost you anything since Wynns is still in the organization. Typical off-season dumpster dive. There might be a reason he only played in 4 games for the Rockies. I'm thinking the main reason may be because they don't play AA ball.

Tony, the Orioles also need to fill out the Norfolk and Bowie rosters, and some of the guys who have been picked up may play in Norfolk. They may be taken off the 40-man roster, and if they pass through waivers, they can be outrighted to Norfolk. The Orioles aren't finding players just for the major league team, they need to stock the system.
"Stock the system"? Boy Genius has traded almost all of the O's' better players for seemingly dozens of castoffs, unproven "prospects," and teenage lads with no professional experience. And now he has to figure out how to play all of them--plus draftees--with a reduced number of farm clubs. Maybe the goal is to have the entire O's roster consist of players earning MLB minimum salaries and then wait until 2025 to throw "the switch" (a strategy most of us would surely support).
