Marlins cleared to play Orioles, with starting time moved back to 8:15 p.m.

BALTIMORE—After some uncertainty, the Orioles’ Tuesday night game against the Miami Marlins will be played, although the starting time was pushed back to 8:15 after the Marlins were cleared to play.

Miami hasn’t played since July 26th after at least 18 players tested positive for Covid-19.

Tuesday afternoon, Major League Baseball issued a statement: “The start of tonight’s game between the host Baltimore Orioles and the Miami Marlins at Camden Yards may be delayed as we await the final test results clearing the Marlins to resume play. MLB is in communication with both clubs and expects resolution within the next several hours.”

There was about an hourlong delay for media, who were supposed to be allowed entry to Oriole Park at 3 p.m., and no players or staff members from either team were visible. The tarp was on the field but removed well before the scheduled start.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that he wasn’t certain about the Marlins’ 30-man roster because the outbreak had forced widespread changes.

“I do know quite a few of the players that are here, that I think are here,” Hyde said in a video conference call. “I’m familiar with a lot of their guys but really tough to prepare because I’m unfamiliar with many as well … not easy to prepare for a team who you’re not sure exactly who’s on the roster. You’re kind of guessing, and it’s very, very unusual.”

The Marlins were scheduled to play Tuesday night, a Wednesday doubleheader and a Thursday night game. Miami was set to be the home team in Game 2 of Wednesday’s doubleheader and on Thursday.

    • You know, you're probably right. But I'm a weak old man and simply can't turn away.

    • I just like hearing the games on radio. I don’t care if they’re spring training or regular season. At the moment each has equal significance. :) but without them our lives would be a little poorer, the world a little weirder, and society less familiar. So I am just grateful for what there is of baseball.

  • How many times have the O’s been ready to play, there was a reason for the expanded rosters, Marlins need to put a friggin team on the field, maybe it’s not who they want, too bad, when they’re supposed to start or forfeit...this is ridiculous...go O’s...

  • Apparently showing up with some new guys who need testing or the whole team in general after what has taken place with them (Marlins) the last couple of weeks.I like the way the team is playing, and though it looks somewhat precarious as to whether the season will be completed, I am not willing to give it up yet.

  • I’m all for keeping everyone safe, but MLB and the Marlins should be better prepared for this game. They’ve had a week to think about their roster and get everyone tested (again and again). Just seems odd.

  • Rich, thanks for keeping us updated on rapidly changing developments during this strange season ... don't know what you've heard, but apparently it is widely rumored that Marlins players were especially reckless in ignoring MLB safety protocols (i.e., partying), thus provoking the Commissioner's angry statement a few days ago.

  • Boy DJ looks great . I’m sure YD and RM are having a beer watching the game and saying we can do better then this but I realize he was a high draft pick so we gotta give him a look.
