Orioles’ Mancini to undergo ‘non-baseball medical procedure’

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida.—Trey Mancini has left the Orioles to undergo a “non-baseball medical procedure, and is going to miss some time,” manager Brandon Hyde said after the team’s 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.

“We love Trey, and we’re going to respect his privacy in this thing, and we’ll have more information as we know more,” Hyde said.

Mancini, who last year was voted Most Valuable Oriole after hitting 35 home runs and driving home 97, has missed time with what at first was described as “flu-like symptoms.” He hasn’t played since March 2 when he left the game after two at-bats.

Hyde has said repeatedly since then that Mancini wasn’t feeling well.

“I think, like anybody else would, that he’s going to go have further tests done,” Hyde said. “All I can say is we’re thinking about him. We’re just going to respect his privacy in this whole thing. We hate to see Trey miss time but, hopefully, it’s not too long.”

Mancini, who will turn 28 on March 18, has played in only five games this spring, going 4-for-14 (.286) with two RBIs.

The procedure could put Mancini’s availability for the March 26 opener against the New York Yankees in jeopardy.
