A year ago, Brandon Hyde was hired as Orioles manager just before the holidays, and his coaching staff wasn’t fully assembled until late January.
As he heads into his second year, Hyde’s staff has been changed somewhat with three new coaches and one who has a new role.
The Orioles have hired Anthony Sanders as first base coach, Darren Holmes as bullpen coach, Fredi Gonzalez as major league coach and Jose Hernandez, who was in Gonzalez’s role a year ago, shifts to assistant hitting coach.
These moves, which were previously reported, were announced on Monday.
Sanders, who replaces Arnie Beyeler at first, was the Colorado Rockies’ outfield and baserunning coordinator for the past two seasons. He had been in Colorado’s organization since 2007.
Holmes was the Rockies’ bullpen coach for the past five seasons, and spent 13 seasons in the majors as a pitcher. He pitched five games for the Orioles in 2000. He replaces John Wasdin.
Gonzalez managed the Miami Marlins from 2007-2010 and the Atlanta Braves from 2011-2016. He’d been the Marlins’ third base coach for the past three seasons.
Hernandez, a longtime coach for Triple-A Norfolk, had been elevated to the major league staff a year ago, and replaces Howie Clark.
Returning to the staff are pitching coach Doug Brocail, major league field coordinator and catching coach Tim Cossins, third base coach Jose Flores and hitting coach Don Long.
