Eager to add another experienced major league starter, the Orioles signed Dan Straily on Friday.
Straily, a 30-year-old right-hander released by the Miami Marlins on March 25, was immediately added to the major league roster.
In seven seasons with Oakland, the Chicago Cubs, Houston, Cincinnati and Miami, Straily is 42-36 with a 4.23 ERA.
His best season came in 2016 when he was 14-8 with a 3.76 ERA with the Reds.
Straily pitched seven games for the Cubs in 2014 when manager Brandon Hyde was a coach, and four games for the Astros in 2015 when Mike Elias worked in Houston’s front office.
“We pursued Dan Straily immediately once he became available,” Elias said in a statement. “He’s the type of accomplished major league starter who will help stabilize our pitching staff. We are hoping to work him into our rotation soon.”
To make room for Straily, the Orioles designed infielder Drew Jackson for assignment.
Jackson, a Rule 5 pick, will be offered to the other 29 teams before being offered back to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Philadelphia drafted Jackson and then traded him to the Orioles for international signing bonus money.
In three games, Jackson was hitless in three at-bats. He had shown an ability to play both the infield and outfield during spring training.
“It was tough taking Drew off the roster,” Elias said. “His versatility has always been attractive, and he has shown tremendous effort and had a great attitude. He has a bright career ahead of him. We simply decided we wanted 13 pitchers for the foreseeable future and had to make a tough call. It is never easy to carry Rule 5 picks all year.”
When the season began, the Orioles had three Rule 5 picks, Jackson, reliever Pedro Araujo and shortstop Richie Martin. On Wednesday, Araujo, who was drafted from Chicago in December 2017, was placed on waivers, but cleared and returned to the Cubs.
On Friday afternoon, the Orioles reacquired Araujo from Chicago in return for international bonus money. He was assigned to Double-A Bowie.

Jackson seemed like a good gamble, bummer. . Dunno about this pitcher, we’ll see. Martin’s bat has disappeared. So much for Lasiks. Too much dead weight in roster.
Dropping Jackson is another ? decision by the Boy Genius. Per the scouting reports he had very good speed and a very good arm. He had a .350 OBP and hit 15 homers last year in AA. And he had a great spring training hitting and playing all over the field. He gets dropped so they can keep Joey R. and Hanser Alberto???
Half these guys gone by break anyway, if Elias knows what he’s doing. If he keeps Sisco, Hays, Mountcastle, Diaz, Santander, Harvey, Akin down all year, May be a revolt..

Boy Genius built a pretty good organization somewhere in Texas if I'm not mistaken. Less than week he's shown he's not afraid to make snap decisions. Jackson could do everything but didn't stand out at anything. Btw he'll probably be back. Martin's a keeper simply for that glove.
Orial: I couldn't agree more. I think the naysayers here need to show some patience with Elias and Co. since they have a reputation for success. It is always easy to complain about the problem instead of being positive with the solution.
He did NOT build it. He was an assistant, NOT the decisionmaker.
The naysayers are trying to convince everyone that they’d run/manage the team better than anyone the Orioles hire.

There's one of the 2 rule-5's that I predicted wouldn't stick. The other is Richie Martin.

Yes I did think Aroujo would stick. He was reacquired yesterday and sent to Bowie.
But he will have to work his way back on the 40 or 25 man rosters. Pitcher's with all the injury risks they face with their throwing arms, shoulders, forearms, wrists, hands, etc. etc., it wouldn't surprise me to see Aroujo back in Baltimore before the season ends.
Probably towards the end of the season. He’ll be rule 5 eligible again if we do not add him to the 40 man. I suspect we will trade a couple of Straily,
Cobb, Bundy, GIVens and Bleier and their spots will have to be filled by someone.

I assume Straily acquisition means an end to the "opener" experiment. It's an idea that has it's place but, not on a regular basis.

Yes he can! On May 6, 2012 the birds played a 17 inning game for the ages @ Fenway. The O's got the W and Davis got his first and only save coming out of the pen (or in this case the infield). That was an unforgettable game during one of my favorite seasons of orioles baseball.
I remember that game fondly. I was watching it on TV with a bunch of Red Sox fans. Buck knew that Davis pitched in college and used him as a late inning secret weapon. He got the save, and I got to gloat.
Those were the good ole days! However, maybe ButchBird is on to something. Can watching Davis pitch be any more excruciating than watching him try to hit?
If I remember correctly, Davis also struck out 5 times in that game.
Gausman looked pretty good tonight, although it was against the Marlins, actually saw him smiling, shoulda traded Al Bundy....
Matt Wotherspoon should of been dfa not Jackson. so we wasted more international money to get Jackson which is wasted now he won't make it through waivers and if he some how does and Dodgers don't want him back it will probably cost us more international money to get him back. I can't believe they had all this international money and it keeps getting wasted. I know we missed out on the big int. free agents but there is a ss I can't remember his name that is still out there who we should sign for nothing more then just to show us things are different cause we lose the money I believe in June if it doesn't get spent

One thing I do admire about Elias is that he's not afraid to strike fast and make a move. Davis is out of his control(ownership issue) but everything else is all his. Wright should have that feeling that "someone's watching him". As far as Jackson--seems a "jack of all trades master of none" type of player. That "master of none" got him released.
Read my other post about what the independent scouting reports said about Jackson. Maybe you can tell me what Hanser Alberto is "master" of.

You’re getting all bent out of shape about a nearly 26 year old utility player who hit pretty well in AA as a 25 year old? And an independent scouting report? Drew Jackson is a 40 FV prospect who was rated as #25 in our system. We didn’t let go of some stud here. We let go of a guy who might be Ryan Flaherty.

This is a move that DD would have done. Same old same old. Go get a 30 year old journeyman pitcher that is one of "your guys" from your past. I expect that Jackson will be retained, but at an additional cost. Better than the Marlins, I guess.
He signed him for slightly over the league minimum. And he’s not really big from Elias past. They scooped him up off waivers and he pitched in AAA for the stros for a year. This is a no cost acquisition and I’m not sure if you’ve been watching but we have very few starters who can pitch 6 innings. Our BP has been absolutely taxed through the first 2 weeks. That’s a bad recipe for a whole season. We can’t throw 4-5 relievers every night.
You want 13 pitchers Hyde. You call Wright a pitcher. Lol dumb move getting rid of Jackson and keeping a pitcher who has failed miserably time after time

Everyone, don't get caught up with the MLB roster. I can see Straily as another Bundy. Fly ball pitcher at Camden yards, should be good for 10 - 15 losses like Bundy. Looks like Elias is playing for another number 1 draft for the 2020 season as well. Hoping for another 100 plus losses with at least 30 plus coming from Straily and Bundy. Two good draft seasons coming into the farm should turn things around for 2021.

Just a update our SS of last year was named player of the week with 4 homers , 10 RBI and a 410 average. Our current SS although he can field his totally overmatched by major league pitching and probably will bat below 200 all year
And I don’t know if Drew could play SS but he definitely can hit better then Martin
Can you answer this Rich. We get Aruajo back for international bonus money . Why can’t we use this money before June but other clubs can plus what does it say when the players we offer back to the clubs they still don’t want and yet we take them

Bhoffman, the Orioles don’t think there are players who will sign for the money. Not sure what the clubs acquiring the money will do.
