SARASOTA, Fla.-What’s happening? – Dylan Bundy starts against the Minnesota Twins in Fort Myers today. Bundy allowed a run on four hits in his first start on Feb. 28. He’ll be followed by David Hess, Jimmy Yacabonis, Josh Osich and Miguel Castro.
Manager Brandon Hyde will start Bundy on three days’ rest.
“Because he threw just a couple of innings the other day,” Hyde said. “We’re going to start getting those kind of guys in the five days as we go along here. I think he wanted to get back on the mound, also.”
Bundy likely will pitch three innings.
Nate Karns threw a side session on Saturday. He was scheduled to pitch Friday night but was scratched because of soreness in his arm. Hyde said that Karns will pitch in a few days.
Infielder Hanser Alberto, who was reacquired by the Orioles from the San Francisco Giants on Friday, will play today.
The Orioles made their first cuts of camp, optioning Hunter Harvey to Triple-A Norfolk. Harvey allowed two runs in two innings.
Hyde said that the Orioles don’t have enough innings here for Harvey to pitch. In minor league camp, he’ll get longer outings.
“When we had our meeting with him, we told him how impressed we were with what he did the last few weeks,” Hyde said. “He understood. We just wanted to do what was best for him. We feel like the best thing for him right now is to go down there, work on a few more things, stay healthy and break camp with whatever team he goes with and continue to pitch like he’s been pitching here.”
The Orioles also assigned catcher Cael Brockmeyer, outfielders Ryan McKenna and Mike Yastrzemski, infielder Zach Vincej, right-handed pitchers Dean Kremer, Zach Pop, and left-handed pitcher Chris Lee to minor league camp.
The Orioles have 54 players in camp.
The Orioles acquired right-handed pitcher Xavier Moore from the Minnesota Twins for international signing bonus money. The 20-year-old is 0-1 with a 4.54 ERA in 25 games in 2017 and 2018. Earlier in the day, Moore was traded from Texas to Minnesota for outfielder Zack Granite.
Major League Baseball suspended Orioles minor league pitcher Willie Rios for 50 days for a drug abuse. The left-hander was 2-4 with a 5.32 ERA for Short-Season Aberdeen last season.
What’s happened?—Andrew Cashner allowed four runs on six hits in three innings in the Orioles’ 7-5 win over the Detroit Tigers.
Cashner allowed a three-run home run to Niko Goodrum in the first inning.
“I thought it was a good pitch, [catcher Austin Wynns] said he thought it was a good pitch, but I’ll look at it on video,” Cashner said. “I think it might have been up a little bit too much, but it’s just something I’ve got to work on, working the fastball both sides of the plate.”
Hyde had no problem with Cashner’s outing.“I just think he had one of those rough spring training first innings then kind of found it,” Hyde said. “Like a lot of guys do, maybe a little overamped.”
Anthony Santander was 3-for-3 with a three-run home run. He’s batting .462 (6-for-13).
“We’ve been working on a couple of things [with] my swing,” Santander said through a translator. “We’ve been working really hard for the past few days on it. This game is about adjustments, and every adjustment you can make is going to put you in a better position to succeed.”
Jonathan Villar injured a pinkie when it was jammed by a spike. He said that during the regular season he would have continued. It’s the second injured pinkie in as many days. Trey Mancini hurt one on Saturday in Fort Myers against Boston.
What’s up with?– Carlos Perez is one of six catchers on the Orioles’ spring roster. Perez has caught more major league games than either Chance Sisco or Austin Wynns.
In 2015, Perez played 86 games for the Los Angeles Angels, batting .250 with four home runs and 21 RBIs. A year later, he played 87 games for the Angels. He’s also played for Atlanta and Texas and has a .215 average in four seasons.
He’s known as a strong defensive catcher and has thrown out 38 percent of runners trying to steal.
“I think all the catchers play good defense, too,” Perez said. “I feel very confident in my defense.”
What’s what? The Orioles have had their share of famous names in camp. Mike Yastrzemski was with the team until Sunday, and on Friday, they brought Preston Palmiero, son of Rafael, to play first base in the late innings. Sunday, they brought Ryan Ripken, son of Cal Ripken Jr., to play first base in relief of Chris Davis.
What’s the word? “We just have a lot of room to grow defensively. Making the routine play, being consistent and making the routine play allows you to win in the big leagues. If you don’t make the routine play, you’re allowing extra outs. You’re allowing extra pitches for your pitcher, bullpen usage. All that stuff that not only affects you tonight, it affects you through the series and through the next few days.”-Hyde on the Orioles’ need to improve their defense.

Good to see Davis is already in mid-season form. No stumbling out of the gate for him. A model of consistency.
Yes, its a small sample size, only 12 ABs, but Davis' start is certainly not encouraging - will be interesting to see how Elias handles this situation ... if Davis is still an offensive disaster by June or July, will ownership allow Elias to cut him loose?
Crush Davis is burnt toast. When will the Angelos brothers admit this and cut bait? His contract is 100% on them or the old man ... not Dan Duquette.
Wonder why Mike Yastrzemski keeps pounding away? He's one of Hyde's first cuts, he's 28, his odds of ever being an average major leaguer are slim to none. Poor Chris Davis. Two strikeouts yesterday, .083 batting average, second week of spring training and the pressure is already ON. Rooting for Davis, but wondering if there's more to his predicament than meets the eye? Yusniel Diaz batting 9 for 20 (.450). Hyde sees ya, Diaz.
Mike Yaz. might be better off in a different organization. Too many outfielder types ahead of him. Interesting cuts but they bring Alberto back. I understand the message of better defense , the writing on the wall for Wynn’s and Sisco since they seem to like the other 2 guys . I said yesterday about Davis not looking any different and a lot of people have taken notice. Makes you wonder why Ellias didn’t talk to Davis over the winter.
My question is why is Chris Davis batting 4th? It's bad enough we are stuck with him. How about 8th so he gets the least amount at bats and not killing the top of the lineup.
I watched a few innings of the Phillies game on Thursday. Davis stuck out and one of their announcers said he isn't coming close to making contact. He missed a couple pitches by a foot. Right now he looks worse than last year, which I didn't think was possible.
Davis does not look good at all and it is a shame.seems to watch a couple strikes go by then has one swing left.I think he should be attacking the pitcher right out of the gate but whether he has anything left is questionable.Like someone said,there may be more to this than meets the eye but not sure the organization knows what it is.I know defense is a big thing with the coaching staff and a lot of the routine plays are turning into bad ball handling but most observant lousy throws.As far as catching Sisco has to be given the nod if he continues to hit like this but it is way too early.I hate to be making some of these decisions because someone is going to lose an opportunity.Diaz is most likely going down but I think he handles the bat well even when he makes an out.

Sisco is the catcher … let the boy grow. Besides …why worry about his defense when the object of the season is to tank? This kid can and will hit.
The big question marks in my mind are what to do at 1st (I'd hand it over to Mancini) .. and then after that … let’s figure out 3rd & short.
How much longer are we going to have to put up with the “new” Chris Davis? Let’s see... that works out to a strike out percentage of 58%. WOW! Now if that was for hitting he’d be in line for the Hall of Fame instead of the Hall of Shame.
As far as Davis goes, we’ve seen his best days, I’m sure. Sunday, his first two at bats the bat never left his shoulder. Not even an attempt. Nothing until the 7th or 8th when he grounded to 2nd. He looks completely lost, in spite of his talk about adjustments made during the offseason. Remember, he said the same things last year at ST. I’m thinking he doesn’t give a hoot because he knows the paychecks will continue to direct deposit. Sad situation.
Rich, I have a question...Does Diaz wear a 5 pound necklace and leave his shirt unbuttoned 1/2 way during down every game? It looks ridiculous, particularly for a kid trying to make the team. I’m surprised he is allowed to do so.

I thought that Harvey and Yaz would have stuck around a little longer. This is especially true with Harvey, due to the lack of depth at SP.
BirdsCaps, Harvey was sent out so that he could pitch regularly at a lower level. He wasn’t going to be a starter coming out of camp.
As far as SS and 3rd , I think Martin has been impressive.If he hits a little bit his defense should do him fine. As far as 3rd goes it would be a bad decision to let Núñez go. He’s probably a late bloomer and he can definitely hit. He was putting in the work last year with Bobby Dickerson and I’m sure that will continue with the new regime if afforded to him. Just seeing Escobar these few times it doesn’t look like he has the arm anymore, so why hold a guy like Jackson back. It’s also time to put Mancini at 1st and Davis will play when ever. CD playing exacting the same as last year. It’s a curse that won’t leave us.
When Adderall was taken away from CD he could not play MLB anymore. Obviously it helped his concentration and without it he is totally inept. Rich do you know if he is taking any meds right now. If he continues like this something has to be done as he is hurting the whole organization. Rich how does he show up everyday with a smile on his face. He has to be totally embarrassed about his play over the last two years. I would say the O’s should consult with a law firm and look into suing him for non performance. Maybe this will at least embarrass him enough to accept a buyout. I do not feel sorry for him at all. He has enough money to go hunting or fishing or whatever he likes and live a super comfortable life without ever having to work again
