The Orioles outrighted four players to Triple-A Norfolk, trimming their roster to 36 Thursday. Left-handed pitcher Sean Gilmartin, infielders Corban Joseph and Jace Peterson and right-handed pitcher Gabriel Ynoa passed through waivers.
Gilmartin and Peterson elected free agency while Joseph and Ynoa, who was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list, signed minor league contracts with the Orioles.
Peterson, who was acquired on April 24 on waivers from the New York Yankees, batted .195 with three home runs and 28 RBIs in 95 games. He also stole 13 bases in 15 attempts.
He was versatile, playing second and third base, shortstop and the corner outfield spots. He even pitched, allowing four runs on six hits in his only major league outing.
Peterson was eligible for arbitration, and it’s possible the Orioles could re-sign him.
Gilmartin, who was signed as a minor league free agent in July, came to the Orioles on Aug. 11. He was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA and demonstrated he could pitch multiple innings.
Joseph batted .222 (4-for-18) in two stints with the team. He and his older brother, Caleb, became just the second pair of brothers to play in the same game for the Orioles. (Bill and Cal Ripken Jr. were the first.)
Ynoa did not pitch in 2018 because of shin splints and a shoulder injury.
The 40-man roster is at 36, and the team is expected to reinstate designated hitter/outfielder Mark Trumbo, pitchers Pedro Araujo and Richard Bleier and outfielder Austin Hays from the 60-day disabled list on Friday.

Not surprising at all to see any of those guys go. A look under the hood at Gilmartins numbers suggested he was very fortunate to post those numbers. At least 2 more cuts coming for Cervenka and Tate. Susac should be an easy choice but I’m not so sure who the 2nd guy will be. Maybe it’s Donnie Hart or vielma. I think Rickard stays with the loss of Andreoli because it makes little sense to have a guy like Austin hays in the majors as a fourth outfielder. Rich, do you think Beckham gets tendered a deal? I’d imagine it’d be easier to remove him off the 40 now if we weren’t?
I think that will be a decision for the new hierarchy, jbigle. These other decisions are for clearing necessary space. A Beckham decision has wider implications for the composition of the roster. If the team wasn’t going to tender him, they’d also want to look at if they could make a trade for him first.
