UMBC’s season comes to an end; Terps win 16-2, are last Maryland team standing in NCAAs

The University of Maryland Terrapins are the last four-year school in the state still playing baseball after beating UMBC, 16-2, on Saturday afternoon in the losers’ bracket of the NCAA Regionals in Winston-Salem, NC.

It’ll be a tough climb for the Terrapins, but their College World Series dream is still alive.

On Sunday at noon, Maryland will play the loser of Saturday night’s contest between host Wake Forest University and West Virginia University, which beat Maryland, 9-1, on Friday. The game will be aired on ESPN3.

If Maryland (38-22) can win Sunday afternoon, they’ll then have to be victorious Sunday evening and Monday against the previously unbeaten team in the tournament to advance to Super Regionals.

UMBC (23-25) saw its season end Saturday after an inspiring run in the postseason, which included capturing its first America East Conference Tournament championship.

The Retrievers lost 11-3 to Wake Forest on Friday before ending its season against in-state rival Maryland.

The Terps’ explosive offense was paced Saturday by shortstop Kevin Smith, who homered twice and drove in six runs. Outfielder Marty Costes (Archbishop Curley) and catcher Justin Morris (DeMatha) also homered.

Junior right-hander Taylor Bloom (Riverdale Baptist) allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks in eight innings for the victory.
