Orioles-Yankees still plan to play; Cairo on Henderson; O’s lineup

NEW YORK—The Orioles and New York Yankees are still scheduled to play their 162^nd and final game of the 2026 season on Sunday.

The game was scheduled to begin at 3:20 but was moved up to 1:05 p.m. because of an unfavorable forecast that calls for heavy rain in the late afternoon.

Rain continued to fall and the tarp remained on the field a little over an hour before the scheduled start.

After sitting out Friday’s second game of a doubleheader, shortstop Gunnar Henderson is in the lineup and batting third. Henderson said in an interview on Friday that he has been dealing with right wrist soreness.

Infield coach Miguel Cairo is convinced Henderson will rebound in 2027 after a disappointing season. He’s hitting .226.

“Gunnar is an elite shortstop,” Cairo said. “If you think about all the errors he made … he knows what he was doing wrong. If you think about the tough plays, he was above average in everything. That’s an elite player. He’s going to come back.”

Cairo said Henderson prepares well.

“He’s a winner. He likes to work,” he said. “He works really hard. He plays the game the right way. Every single day, he shows up. You want 26 players like that. Every day, they show up to play the game the right way. He sometimes is hard on himself, but I want to have 26 players like that.”
