Who is Orioles’ unsung hero? | MAILBAG

Question: My pick for MVP is the Polar Bear and Unsung Hero is Coly Mayo. What do you think about these men receiving the honors? From: Mark Sprucebank

Answer: Mark, I assume you mean the Most Valuable Oriole award and not the American League’s Most Valuable Player.

I think Pete Alonso will get some down ballot votes for MVP and I think he’ll be among the 10 top finishers, maybe a little higher.

I think Mayo’s second half has been strong, and I think he’s a good choice for the unsung hero award as is Brandon Young. Had Josh Walker been with the team all season, perhaps he would have gotten some votes for your award. 

Question: I was always tantalized by Luis Robert’s potential. Assuming he’s not coming back this year, is this the last we see him in an O’s uniform or is there a chance he comes back next year? From: David Larry Kim 

Answer: David, Luis Robert has a $20 million option for next season, which the Orioles will decline. He gets a buyout of $2 million. I think he won’t be back with the Orioles next year.

I think the Orioles were intrigued by his tools and his productive August for the New York Mets. They were hoping that would carry over to the Orioles, but it didn’t.
