MINNEAPOLIS—The Orioles and Boston Red Sox completed the trade for three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman on Wednesday when outfielder Harold Rivas was sent to the Orioles as the player to be named later in the August 3rd deal.
Rivas, an 18-year-old centerfielder from Venezuela, hit .241 with a .773 OPS, 6 home runs and 19 RBIs for Boston’s Florida Complex League team this season. He stole 23 bases in 28 attempts.
Baseball America ranked him No. 10 among Red Sox prospects. MLB Pipeline had him 13th.
In exchange for Rutschman and catcher Jake Rogers, who was designated for assignment on Tuesday, the Orioles received starting pitchers Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, outfielder Enddy Azocar and catcher Carlos Narváez, who’s been the Orioles’ primary catcher.
Eyanson is at Double-A Chesapeake. Azocar and Witherspoon are at High-A Frederick. Eyanson is ranked No. 1, Witherspoon No. 7 and Azocar No. 8 in MLB Pipeline’s rankings. Baseball America has Eyanson first, Azocar fifth and Witherspoon 11th.
Rutschman was 1-for-3 in his Red Sox debut on Tuesday night, walking twice, in a 5-3 loss to the Blue Jays in Toronto. It was Boston’s fourth straight loss.
“Really nice to get out there and play today,” Rutschman said. “The guys have a ton of energy, they’re rolling. Nice to be out there.”
