Orioles activate catcher Jake Rogers, designate Chadwick Tromp for assignment

The Orioles activated catcher Jake Rogers, who was acquired from Detroit on Thursday for minor league right-hander Zane Barnhart, before Friday’s home game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Rogers will replace catcher Chadwick Tromp on both the 26- and 40-man rosters. Tromp was designated for assignment on Friday.

In nine games, Tromp hit .125 (3-for-24) with an RBI. He pitched the eighth inning of the Orioles’ 14-0 loss to Detroit on Tuesday night.

Rogers will pair with Yohel Pozo, who was recalled from Double-A Chesapeake on Monday. Pozo, who replaced Sam Huff, who was also designated for assignment, was acquired off waivers from St. Louis on July 23rd.

Frontline catchers Samuel Basallo and Adley Rutschman remain on the 10-day injured list. Basallo is out with right shoulder inflammation and Rutschman with left wrist inflammation.

When Rogers plays for the Orioles, he’ll become the sixth catcher used this year. Last year, the Orioles used a franchise-record seven catchers: Rutschman, Basallo, Tromp, Gary Sánchez, Maverick Handley, Jacob Stallings and Alex Jackson.

Handley was with the club earlier this season but was only used as a pinch-hitter.
