Eager for offense, Orioles add catcher Yohel Pozo, designate Sam Huff for assignment

Eager to add some offense to the catching position while Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo are out, the Orioles on Monday recalled catcher Yohel Pozo from Double-A Chesapeake and designated catcher Sam Huff for assignment.

Pozo was claimed off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday.

With Basallo and Rutschman on the 10-day injured list, Huff and Chadwick Tromp, who’ve been sharing the catching duties, are a combined 1-for-24. The Orioles are hoping Pozo can provide some offensive spark until Basallo and Rutschman return.

Pozo hit .242 with five RBIs in 18 games this season with the Cardinals. In three seasons with Texas and St. Louis, Pozo is hitting .247 with six home runs and 33 RBIs in 106 games. He’s thrown out 21.3 percent of runners attempting to steal.

Huff hit .121 (4-for-33) with an RBI in 14 games in three stints this season. He struck out 19 times and was hitless in his last 18 at-bats. Huff grounded out to third with the bases loaded to end Sunday’s game when the Orioles were out of pinch-hitting options.

Tromp is 3-for-17 (.176) with an RBI in six games.

The Orioles have 39 players on their 40-man roster.
