Orioles-Red Sox rained out, will play split doubleheader Wednesday; Basallo says shoulder improving

BOSTON—The Orioles-Red Sox game scheduled for Tuesday night was postponed by rain. The teams will play a split doubleheader on Wednesday. The first game will begin at 1:35 p.m., and the night game at 7:10.

It’s the Orioles’ third rainout of the season, the first on the road.

Dean Kremer (1-2, 4.15) will start against Jake Bennett (5-3, 2.35) in Game 1. Kyle Bradish (6-9, 3.61) will start Game 2 for the Orioles. The Red Sox haven’t decided on a Game 2 starter. Ranger Suárez, who was scheduled to come off  the injured list to start on Tuesday night, could pitch Game 2.

Basallo hopes to return soon

Catcher Samuel Basallo, who left Sunday’s game with right shoulder discomfort, was not in the lineup for Tuesday night’s postponed game.

“I’m just grinding right now, and I’m just trying to get better soon,” he said. Basallo said the shoulder was imporoving, and he considers himself day-to-day.

“I was feeling it, but it wasn’t bad,” he said. “The last two games coming from the break, I felt a little worse, but other than that, I’m feeling much better right now.”

With Adley Rutschman on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation, the Orioles added Chadwick Tromp, who was in the lineup for Tuesday’s game. Sam Huff was added to the roster on Sunday. Basallo is confident he’ll avoid the injured list.

“I feel like I’m going to avoid that, and we’ll see what happens in the next couple of days,” Basallo said. “I’m going to be back soon and do whatever it takes to win games.”

With Rutschman out, Basallo needs to take over the bulk of the catching. ‘

“We’re doing something good right now,” Basallo said. “I don’t want to [miss] games too much. I just want to be here for the team, try to do my best and try to be back as soon as possible and just keep what we’ve been doing the last couple of days.

“You don’t want to see your teammate go on the IL, especially him,” he said about Rutschman. “He’s been playing good this year. I hope he gets back soon and he gets better soon, and we keep winning games.”

Basallo was the first Oriole to receive an extension, an eight-year, $67 million contract last August. Since then starters Shane Baz (five years, $65 million) and Kyle Bradish (five years, $90 million) have been extended.

“That’s what you want to see,” Basallo said. “Those guys, they deserve that and a little more, and if the team decides to give another extension to the other guys, it’s really good to play with the same guys for a long time.”

Injury update

Starter Chris Bassitt, who had back surgery on June 25^th, is scheduled to begin throwing from the mound this week. Bassitt is on the 60-day injured list.

Reliever Colin Selby, who’s on the 60-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation, will visit Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles next week for a second opinion.
