BALTIMORE—The Orioles have 11 players on the injured list, and they’ve used the IL 19 times this season. Both figures are among the highest in Major League Baseball.
Each week, the Orioles issue an injury report, and the most interesting news is on left-handed starter Cade Povich, who was placed on the IL on May 8th.
Povich, who has left elbow inflammation, received a cortisone injection on the elbow by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas last week. He was scheduled for a reassessment on Monday so he could begin a throwing program.
Another starter, Dean Kremer, who hasn’t pitched since April 18th due to a strained right quadriceps muscle, remains in Sarasota. He was with the Orioles last week in St. Petersburg for their series with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Kremer continues his throwing progression, but since he hasn’t pitched in more than five weeks, he would most likely need a lengthy rehab assignment.
Reliever Colin Selby, who hasn’t pitched this season due to right shoulder inflammation, received a platelet-rich plasma injection on May 20th. Selby was also with the Orioles in Tampa Bay last week.
Both Kremer and Povich are on the 15-day injured list. Selby is on the 60-day injured list.
Reliever Félix Bautista, who had rotator cuff and labrum surgery last August, was not in Tampa Bay last week. The Orioles hope he can pitch late this season. He’s on the 60-day IL.
So is reliever Yaromil Hiraldo, who’s eligible to come off the 60-day on June 1st. He’s continues to rehab his right shoulder inflammation.
Closer Ryan Helsley continues to travel with the Orioles. Helsley is on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. He’s said that he hopes to pitch sometime next month.
Outfielder/designated hitter Heston Kjerstad, who’s on the 60-day IL with a strained right hamstring, continues his rehab with Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday when they open a series with Durham.
Kjerstad, who injured the hamstring late in spring training, is hitting .234 with a home run and six RBIs in 10 games with Norfolk and two with Double-A Chesapeake.
He began his rehab assignment on May 9th, and his 20 days end this week, so the Orioles will either reinstate him or option him to Norfolk.
Outfielder Dylan Beavers, who has been on the 10-day injured list with a strained right oblique since May 11th, was with the Orioles in Tampa Bay. Obliques are often tricky, and the Orioles say he’s continuing his rehabilitation and baseball progression.
First baseman Ryan Mountcastle was with the Orioles for their three-game series with the Rays. Mountcastle is on the 60-day injured list with a fractured left foot, and even though he’s eligible to return on June 12th, he won’t be able to.
Mountcastle is no longer wearing a boot but was still walking with difficulty last week. President of baseball operations Mike Elias recently said that he thought Mountcastle’s return would be delayed until late June or into July.
He’s been on the 60-day IL since April 13th.
Starter Zach Eflin and infielder Jordan Westburg both had Tommy John surgery and won’t play this season.
