Orioles place Povich on injured list, recall Gibson from Norfolk; Henderson stays high in lineup

BALTIMORE—The Orioles on Friday placed left-hander Cade Povich on the 15-day injured list because of inflammation in his left elbow.

They recalled right-hander Trey Gibson from Triple-A Norfolk. Gibson allowed three runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings on Sunday against the Yankees.

Povich left the Orioles-Marlins game in Miami on Thursday night after three innings. The 26-year-old left-hander said he felt discomfort in the second inning, and it started to tighten up in the third.

It’s possible that Povich will receive a cortisone shot, but other options are on the table.

Manager Craig Albernaz said that Povich’s injury is on the outside of the elbow.

“Better than the alternative,” Albernaz said.

Povich is the 12th Oriole on the injured list.

In 38 games, the Orioles have already used nine starting pitchers.

“Every game I go into you have to just be ready for anything,” Albernaz said. “The game is so unpredictable. You can go in and expect your starter to have 110 pitches and go seven innings, or your pitch count’s 80 and next thing you look up, and he’s in the seventh.

“You have to be ready for anything and prepare for the worst and hope for the best.”

Henderson remains high in lineup

Despite hitting just .201 with 54 strikeouts in 37 games, Gunnar Henderson is in the second spot in the batting order.

“With Gunnar you just leave him put,” Albernaz said. “The track record speaks for itself, the talent … He’s just one swing away, and the last game was very encouraging with what he was feeling at the plate, his approach and his feedback on that.

“You take all that into account. You talk to the hitting coaches, how the work is going, and you feel confident in leaving him in the top of the order.”

Notes: The Orioles acquired minor league right-handed pitchers Enyel Garcia and Maicol Lauriano from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for cash considerations. Garcia and Lauriano both pitched for the Phillies’’ Dominican Summer League team in 2025. … Blaze Alexander was a late scratch for Friday night’s game against the A’s because of right calf tightness. He was replaced at third base by Weston Wilson.
