CLEVELAND—Orioles third base coach Buck Britton also works with the infielders, and he’s impressed with how Jeremiah Jackson has taken to second base.
“He came up playing that position a little bit. Last year, it was right field and a little bit of third base,” Britton said.
After second baseman Jackson Holliday had surgery to remove the hamate bone from his right wrist, Jackson stepped in.
Jackson has not just stepped in, but he has stepped up. On Monday night, he hit two home runs, including a grand slam that propelled the Orioles to a 9-7 comeback win after trailing the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-1. On Friday night, he hit a go-ahead three-run homer that delivered another comeback win, 6-4, over the Cleveland Guardians.
“Somebody needed to step up and take the reins, and he did, and he has,” Britton said. “Really happy with the success and a reflection of the work he’s put in, and the expedited process he’s went through to get where he’s at.”
Britton was a major league coach at the beginning of last season under Brandon Hyde and moved to third base when Hyde was dismissed and Tony Mansolino took over. Craig Albernaz retained him.
“I consider myself a survivor, as it is with two regime changes,” Britton said. “It’s been great. I feel like I’ve been treated fairly with everybody. Last year was crazy. I’ve got a lot of respect for the guys that have been here before, and Alby’s been great.
“We had a little bit of a connection playing against each other in Double-A. Even though I’m kind of a holdover, he’s made me feel like one of his guys, so that’s been really nice.”
