Delgado looks to repeat as ‘Prep Ballplayer’ winner; high school playoffs underway throughout the region

Playoff baseball across the state is underway.

Here’s the latest update on the prep postseason as of early afternoon Tuesday:

Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA)

Class 4A: Four teams within our coverage area – Baltimore City and its surrounding counties — have reached the state regional semifinals. And coincidentally, they face each other.

Dulaney hosts Howard, which fell in last year’s state championship game, while Severna Park travels to Arundel — in a rematch of the Anne Arundel County Championship that occurred just six days ago – on the opposite side of the bracket. In that title game, the Falcons earned the 12-9 win. Kody Milton, a University of Maryland signee and son of longtime MLB pitcher Eric Milton, led Severna Park with three RBIs.

Class 3A: Nine teams within our coverage area have reached the state regional semifinals.

In the north region, Franklin hosts Towson. The winner earns a spot in the regional championship against either Bel Air, the only non-Baltimore County school remaining in this region, or Kenwood.

Manchester Valley matches up against Rockville in the west region while Baltimore Polytech Institute travels to Oxon Hill in the south region.

Howard County foes Reservoir and Mt. Hebron face each other in the east region semifinals. Chesapeake (AA), who made last year’s state championship game, will play Stephen Decatur.

Class 2A: Seven teams within our coverage area have reached the state regional semifinals, three of which reside in the north region. Owings Mills and Hereford square off while Lake Clifton travels to Gwynn Park.

Century and Winters Mill – Carroll County schools — battle it out in the west region while Marriotts Ridge and Glenelg, both of Howard County, face off in the south region.

Class 1A: Five teams within our coverage area have reached the state regional semifinals.

The north region consists of two Baltimore County teams and two teams from the city. Sparrows Point travels to Loch Raven while Frederick Douglass and New Era Academy face off.

In the east region, Patterson Mill of Harford County matches up against Colonel Richardson.

All MPSSAA state regional semifinal games are scheduled for Tuesday afternoon – weather permitting.

Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA)

UPDATE – As of early afternoon Tuesday:

Archbishop Curley and Gilman have advanced in the championship bracket of the ‘A’ Conference double-elimination tournament. The Friars took down Loyola 12-2 Monday while the Greyhounds earned a 5-3 victory over No. 2 seed John Carroll. Curley and Gilman play Wednesday – the winner earns a spot in the conference finals Sunday (and Monday, if necessary).

Archbishop Spalding and John Carroll face off at 4:15 p.m. today in the playoff’s second elimination game. Loyola welcomes the winner Wednesday.

The top two seeds in the ‘B’ Conference are moving on in the championship bracket. Both Boys’ Latin and Glenelg County were victors Monday. They play Wednesday — and like the ‘A’ Conference, the winner earns a spot in the conference finals Sunday (and Monday, if necessary).

Severn faces either Gerstell or St. Vincent Pallotti Wednesday. The Falcons play the Panthers today in another elimination game.

Lightning halted the ‘C’ Conference title game between Concordia Prep and Indian Creek Monday in the eighth inning. That is set to resume at 4 p.m. this afternoon at McDonogh School.

Now, getting to our weekly vote.

Here are your finalists:

Gabe Delgado, Jr., RHP, Howard

Delgado, who led this vote earlier in the month, pitched another gem, but this time it occurred in the Class 4A playoffs against Catonsville. In Howard’s 4-1 win Saturday, the right-hander threw seven innings of one-run ball. He gave up three hits and struck out 11 batters.

Josh Moylan, So., INF, Archbishop Spalding

The sophomore wrapped up the MIAA regular season in style early last week. Moylan hit for the cycle Monday against John Carroll. His final at-bat against the Patriots was a walk-off three-run home run. He tallied four RBIs in the team’s 16-13 win. A day later, he added five more hits and two RBIs versus St. Paul’s. Moylan scored three runs.

Alex Rozner, Sr., INF, Severn

Rozner knocked in six of Severn’s 11 runs Friday against St. Vincent Pallotti. In the opening round of the ‘B’ Conference playoffs, the senior hit a grand slam and a single. He also scored a run. Earlier in the week, he had two hits and two RBIs against Friends (the final game of the 2018 MIAA regular season).

Others considered (listed alphabetically): Maurice Elder (Indian Creek); Kody Milton (Severna Park); Cam Nolet (Annapolis); Matt Palumbo (Archbishop Spalding); Justin Pelletreau (Archbishop Spalding); Xander Waddell (Old Mill); Dylan Waltemeyer (Winters Mill)
